Low Stress Life
It’s cliché, but life is short. Too many of us get caught up in what we think we should be doing, holding onto some kind of martyr mentality that we can never live up to. Don’t be afraid to spoil yourself and do things your grandmother would never have done like sleep in on a Sunday, drink wine in the tub while your kids play video games, or have your groceries delivered to your front door. Go ahead, spoil yourself.
-Don’t over-commit. Your kids don’t have to be signed up for every club and every sport that is offered. Free time is underrated. They spend all week day in school while you’re at work and when you have multiple sports and clubs to attend, when is the down time? Let them embrace the stuff they really love. There’s no medal for over-achievers. Well, there might actually be a medal for that but it isn’t more valuable than a lazy Saturday afternoon connecting with your family.
-Spoil yourself. If you can afford it, why not? Get a massage. Use a grocery delivery service. Hire someone to mow your lawn or shovel your driveway. Look at it as supporting a local business and contributing to the thriving economy. You’ll feel good and have more time to do things you truly enjoy.
-Meditate. There is an old saying that says if you don’t have time to meditate you need it even more. I’m paraphrasing but you get the idea. Slow down. Breathe. Remember to be grateful and mindful. This practice will change your life for the better, without question. If you’ve already followed the first two tips, when you finish clearing your mind the groceries are delivered and the kids are making dinner with their free time.
I know you are thinking about what your grandmother might say about lawn service or a massage. “Back in my day, uphill both ways to school, builds character.” But life doesn’t have to be hard to be meaningful. Americans work too hard and forget to stop and enjoy the fruits of their labor, or the fruits of a grocery delivery service, as the case may be. Relax.
